I had high hopes. It is beautiful, and much less of an eyesore than my old soda stream. So I had to watch a YouTube video to verify exactly how to use this because just pulling the handle one time didn’t get me as much carbonation as I’d hoped for. It is significantly more quiet than the soda stream ( which started a very high-pitched squeal) but it does make noise, and unfortunately the drip tray ends up with water in it that has been sucked up through the carbonator tube. And that means that if you pull the handle more than once for the same bottle, which is how you get more carbonation, the water from the bottom of the tray get sprayed onto you. I’ve also found that after a few days in the refrigerator the bottles that came with this machine do not hold all the carbonation in them so now I pull the lever once and refrigerate it and before I’m about to drink it I recarbonate it again. Still it’s worth it to not buy cans and cans of seltzer.

I have used a Sodastream carbonator for several years. Like some others who have commented here, I drink much more water if it’s carbonated. I never add flavors–just carbonated water. But the Sodastream carbonator I have used emits a loud and rude honking noise during the carbonation process of pumping. I’m not talking about a somewhat annoying noise. I’m talking about one that makes older people jump out of their skins, and young boys giggle in a fit of bathroom humor ecstasy. I’m not kidding when I say it can be heard down the street on a summer’s day. Fine for those whose home is surrounded by fields and woods but a problem for those of us in suburbia.AARKE has put an end to all that. This machine makes a hissing noise to release some of the gas during the carbonation process. It occasionally makes a greater growly-grumbling noise when I pump the lever, but it probably wouldn’t do anything more than make the dog open a sleepy eye. I’m happy with this new machine, but I do need to pump the lever four times to achieve the level of carbonation I desire. My only other comment is that it is made mostly of plastic. It looks like stainless steel, but in fact, it’s the canister of gas that gives the device its heft, not the device itself.

It’s an amazing product, I love the sleek design and very quiet unlike soda stream. I live in a very small studio but I don’t mind having it sit on a table as decorating the table/kitchen area. After using it for a couple of weeks I had a problem with it not carbonating H2O and not making the buzz sounds even how hard I tried pulling the lever down. So I tried unscrewing & screwing back Co2 cylinder method which worked fine but the same problem came back soon after several use. However, I was able to come up with a solution!!! The problem seemed to me was a small amount of H2O flow back in the tube and the air wasn’t coming out to make bubble, so after I carbonate H2O and removed the water bottle, simply pull the lever down once to let Co2 come out in the air which removes excess water in the tube(the black stick part). After doing this method, I never experience the problem. So I’m very happy with the product and I’m thinking to buy a second set to MA home. Only wish I have is that I wish the H2O bottle isn’t plastic (even they nicely indicates the expiration date for the bottle-which I think they are super considerable for safe use/health matter).

UPDATED REVIEW (Feb. 19): After six weeks of use, I’ve had to lower my rating from 4 to 2.5. Following up on the below, a few additional items to note: (1) this machine seems to use twice as much CO2 to make the same amount of seltzer as the sodastreams. Pressing the lever once (per the instructions) does nothing, and we end up pressing it at least 4 times. In 6 weeks we’ve gone through 2 CO2 cannisters. (2) The machine is so lightweight that it moves around when trying to screw in or unscrew the bottle. (3) We bought an extra bottle from amazon two weeks ago, and the metal cover on the black plastic cap has fallen off that one too.ORIGINAL REVIEW:We use 3-4 bottles of seltzer a day and have gone through 3 sodastream soda makers (1 crystal, 2 penguin) in 8 years. We’ve never liked the big, clunky, dark plastic sodastreams (though the penguin is slightly better than the crystal) or the harsh, loud noise they make, but we did like the glass bottles that go with these machines. Given how often we used them, we haven’t been surprised they conk out after 2.5 years or so, but hoped for better. So, we were cautiously optimistic about the aarke. The PROS: From a design perspective, the machine takes up much less visual space and is more attractive than the sodastreams. It also offers an easier and more pleasant user experience. Unlike the sodastreams (particuarly the crystal) the operating mechanism – the lever – is positioned for comfortable use and the sound it makes when carbonating is a pleasant “swoosh.” In addition, the open design makes it easier to clean than the sodastreams – if any water drips out of the bottle (which supposedly happens, but has not yet happened after two weeks of daily use), the drip tray easily lifts out for cleaning. The CONS: The bottles are by far the weakest part of the product. First, they are plastic. Second, they are $20 and only one bottle came with the soda maker. Third, they have a shelf life of about 3 years – the date after which they should not be used is stamped on the side. Fourth, the bottles are not dishwasher-safe (unlike the glass soda stream bottles). Finally, the metal cap is actually a metal cover glued to a plastic cap, and the metal cover fell right off after a few days, so now we are just using it with the black plastic cap with a big hard blob of dried glue on top. Also, the whole machine is surprisingly light. I’m guessing that, like the bottle cap, the stainless steel may be a thin sheet wrapped around plastic innards.

I bought this one to replace my soda stream. Its was 3 times more but I leave it out on my counter and I wanted it to look nice. But it never worked as well and I always had time getting it to carbonate as easily and forcefully as the soda stream. Occasionally it would just stop working even when you could tell there was more in the cartridge. It also sprays water everywhere when you use it. I read about it before I bought it but decided to take a chance. Now having replaced 3 cartridges and praying it worked, it doesn’t. Going to contact the company but I’m not expecting much. Maybe I’ll be surprised……….?
