I bought this to cook chicken breasts but found I didn’t like how they came out. Didn’t seem cooked even after 30 minutes. I guess you need to use really thin breasts. Works great for broccoli and hot dogs though. I haven’t tried rice. Overall great if you want to use it for veggies. I would try something else if you are looking to do chicken.

I love this thing. Just put all your dinner components into it and turn on the timer.A few things to note:1. You can cook a full meal for one, maybe two people in this, or a side dish for a family. If you’re going to be cooking for a family I’d recommend a bigger steamer.2. Some things take longer to cook than others. If you want to cook carrots you better stick them in 20 minutes before everything else, while squash is done in under 10 minutes.3. The juice in the drip pan is incredible. Pour it into a baggie and freeze it so that you can use it for soup stock, or whatever. Don’t ever pour it out.4. The spice screen doesn’t do much. With that much steam and that little spice the flavor just gets too diluted. You’re better off seasoning after it is done cooking.

The timer did not work on our first steamer so we called up B&D for support and they wanted $15.00 to exchange the unit they day it arrived in the mail. It was brand new! We then called Amazon and they straightened up the problem and sent a new steamer that worked, thank you Amazon. B&D support sucks as far as I’m concerned by asking for money to fix/replace a defective unit that was brand new. BTW, the steamer is great and a replacement for an older unit that we wore out the rice bowl, but B&D wanted over $20.00 to replace the plastic bowl, about the price of a new steamer…

I use the machine every night for steaming vegetables. This is the second unit i have purchased, each seems to last a year or so. Two issues that i have noticed:1. The timer stops working – when cooking food the timer gets jammed up, so then it winds up over cooking your food.2. The machine leaks water all over the countertop. It leaks out of the bottom of the machine most of the water that hasnt evaporated.I’ve decided to try another brand (Oster) and see how their machine holds up.

We purchased this steamer about 2 years ago and have used it several times a week since. It’s a nice steamer but I can’t quite give it the rave reviews others here have given it, for a few reasons.First, the size of the steamer is somewhat prohibitive. For example, asparagus — my favorite steamed veggie — often needs to be trimmed to fit in the bowl, causing some waste. You can’t put too much in the bowl or else the food won’t steam evenly. Vegetables are a large part of our dinners, and I found this steamer just wasn’t big enough to make as much as we needed. When I used the steamer for broccoli, asparagus, or peppers, no matter how much I cleaned it, it would smell of old vegetables for days. The bowls and lid do clean up in the dishwasher really well, though. Just put them on the top rack and you’re good. The tray with the spice screen has to be hand washed but it cleans up well. The flavor scenter screen also didn’t impart any flavor at all.As a note, even when the machine has been off for several minutes, the steam coming from the machine is dangerous. Do not assume that, just because it dinged 10 minutes ago, you’re safe to open it without a potholder. However, we did discover that this steamer is absolutely wonderful for rice. We use white long grain rice and cook batches of 2 cups rice (with 1 3/4 cups water) and it always turns out perfect. It’s the way it steams rice that makes this a 4-star steamer, in my opinion. You just cannot go wrong when you make rice. Our current steamer needs to be replaced because the heating element is cracked. Little bits of the plastic coating on the element fly off when it’s being used, which surely isn’t safe. The lid and the rice basket are also starting to show signs of warping. Another reviewer has suggested that the water in the steamer must be allowed to cool completely before dumping it out, otherwise the heating element discolors and cracks. We’ll definitely keep that in mind with our second unit.

My name is Angie and I’m addicted to this steamer. I bought it in 2007 and have used it multiple times weekly ever since. It is completely superior to stainless steel steamer inserts for pots wherein one leaf breaks off. Or silicone steamer inserts that make the vegetables taste like toxic waste. This steamer does everything it’s supposed to in a low-tech, wonderfully simple way. Fill the bottom compartment with a cup or two of water. Put veggies in the basket (which can also double as a colander), turn the timer to your desired setting (8 minutes or so for broccoli is just about perfect for us) and go about your business until it dings. The only drawback is that this is another device to store in your kitchen, but I think it is so worth it! It helps you steam healthy vegetables perfectly and is easy to clean and the parts are dishwasher safe. Fabulous, awesome product that was so worth the money!

I’ve had this steamer for quite a few years, used it in fits and spurts, and have gotten perfect results every time. Although I’ve never used it for veggies – or for anything other than rice – the setup is simple and the outcome predictable. I only wish it took less storage space and had an option for cooking a larger amount of rice, since the default amount is excellent for 6 people as a side dish or for 3 or 4 as part of a main dish. Also, due to a strong preference for unflavored rice I’ve never used the Flavor Scenter Screen, but judiciously adding favorite herbs or spices to veggies or rice definitely could enhance the outcome. Highly recommend!
