I had some very specific issues with the Panasonic 1.3 cuFt stainless steel microwave I bought for $129.00 at Costco. I couldn’t see the print on the black keypad. I had to try to memorize the various button locations, but it was not working for me. Plus the appearance was very “utilitarian”. I was willing to live with that. But when I tried to do one of my favorite microwave tasks – defrost a single slice of bread, that was the last straw. Too much work!! So I began to look for a replacement that filled the bill. It was hard to find a lighted display or one that was easy to see, but this Breville won on that score. I also thought it had a nice appearance. The basic features of the Breville as well as the size were similar, and the Breville had extra things like melting butter that I was not sure I would use. At $349.00, it was quite a increase from $129.00, but I bought it. It arrived yesterday and I have been using it and I like it. I especially like the dials instead of the buttons and the LCD display is very nice. But I had one BIG surprise when I looked at it carefully. Underneath the nice chrome accents and deluxe features like the soft close door – it is the exact same machine as the $129.00 Panasonic I returned to Costco (Inverter and all). It reminds me of back when General Motors used to have the same basic car stripped down and sold as a Chevy or with lots of extra stuff as an Oldsmobile – but it was the same basic car. The Beville is the Olds of microwaves and its a keeper for me despite the very high price.

So, the very first one was purchased on Sunday, January 30, 2022. I waited for close to a month before unboxing it. It’s light weight but also, very well made. It doesn’t look cheap or feel cheap but. The issue I had with the first one, was setting the clock and the digital display. After many attempts, I was forced to create a return and send it back. I opted for a replacement, and that came pretty quick. I was so excited when I got the replacement which was on Friday, March 4, 2022. On Saturday evening, I opened the Amazon box to find the box that the microwave is boxed in, in really bad shape. So, I’ll explain for anyone that’s skeptical, it was delivered by USPS, NOT Amazon or UPS. Both times it was delivered, the outer box was pristine, not even a scratch. The microwave came in another cardboard box and inside that cardboard box was the microwave inside of another cardboard box with styrofoam. It’s WELL PACKED! A lot of packing material but, things that you can recycle besides the styrofoam. I mean, it’s an expensive item, so I commend Breville for making sure that the item is packed well. Now, the second box was like, if Hulk ran into Loki inside the Amazon warehouse, yeah it was that bad. I was FURIOUS! I opened the second box along with the third box, to find that the back of the microwave was heavily dented and damaged. I wanted to throw in the towel on this microwave but I didn’t. The lady who helped make this third purchase and return, was really patient and kind. If it wasn’t for her I would’ve just returned it and got a refund. This time, UPS was sent to pick up the second one on Monday, March 7, 2022 and the newest and last one arrived Tuesday, March 8, 2022. I guess third time is the charm. After setting the time and placing it on the microwave stand, it’s really a piece of art. The features are so cool, the soft door closure and it gets your food hot in one try. ONE TRY FOLKS! This microwave is so, so dope! I’ve basically updated all the small and large appliances inside my apartment. Refrigerator, blenders, air fryer, mixer, tea pot and microwave. Along with countless new cooking utensils and smaller gadgets. It’s a smart apartment and I’m in love. Back to the microwave, please get it, even after reading this review. Don’t let it deter you from enjoy this beautiful machine. You will not regret it. Reason for giving one less star is for having to go through all of the mishaps.

I love this microwave… it’s efficient, quiet and cooks most things I’ve tried so far very well. The only thing so far that I do see as low quality is the door itself. Very light weight metal and the plastic pawls that activate the safety interlock etc… are very fragile feeling. Also I notice from the first time opening it if you grab the handle toward the top of it to open the microwave the door distorts and twists as you do this. You need to grab the handle right at the bottom to avoid this. Adults probably will be fine, but if you have teens that often “forget” things you may need a new door over a short period of time. I hope mine holds up as everything else seems wonderful. Breville should have seen this in testing and improved the design on a $400 microwave.

This Breville microwave now uses an inverter instead of cycling the magnetron on/off. Operates more quietly, heating of food is more even/better. They kept the good user interface of the previous model – if you like knobs instead of pressing numbers and buttons, this is a product you’ll like.My previous Breville lasted 7-8 years, so reliability was a bit lower than I’d like. Hopefully this one will last longer.

This microwave uses an inverter to adjust power. Simple explanation, a inexpensive microwave will vary the length of time between 100% power and 0% power to arrive at the selected power setting. An inverter will use the set percentage of power rather than cycle back and forth. Beyond better build quality the added expense in primarily in this microwave having an inverter. Beyond the inverter I find the presets and other various functions do a better job than with an average priced microwave. Glad I took the step up.
