Requirements:I have a recipe handed down from my grandmother in Germany that requires an iron that can produce a very thin βcookieβ, which is then rolled around a dowel to form a cylinder. The Cucina Pro Krumkake iron and the Chefβs Choice 839 Krumkake Express seemed to be the only two electric options (Note: the Bethany Housewares iron is made by, and identical to, the Cucina Pro). This review is intended to express the suitability of these two machines for my needs, and while it will hopefully shed light on suitability to make Krumkake or other things, is not intended to be a judgment of such.Initial Choice:I initially chose the Cucina Pro, because based on all the reviews, I thought it would produce the thinnest βcookieβ. Also, the fact that I could make 2 cookies at a time seemed like it would speed things up. The specifications indicated that each circle was 5β in diameter, which was slightly smaller than I wanted, but still acceptable. When I received the unit I was surprised by how small it was, and dismayed that each circle was actually only 4 & ΒΎ inches. This may not seem like a big deal, but it is a 10% difference in area. Unfortunately, the two circles are separated by only a few millimeters, so if I tried to use up all of the available area without being ultra-careful, the cookies would invariably end up joined together. By the time I got them separated, they had cooled down and hardened too much to be able to be rolled. I finished up the batch of batter by doing one at a time.Letβs try the other.Given how much work was involved, I figured I should at least try the Chefβs Choice Krumkake Express. From a visual inspection, I thought it would produce a thicker cookie, but to my surprise, the actual result was a slightly thinner cookie. Although I could only do one at a time, the whole experience was much more relaxing. The Krumkake Express has a heat control which allows you to specify the heat setting you need for your recipe. I ended up using a setting of 4.5 (out of 6) which I am sure is a good bit higher than the single setting for the Cucina Pro. This allowed the cookie to be baked in a shorter amount of time, while also allowing it to get darker and crisper – as required by my recipe. The Krumkake Express also does a better job of maintaining the heat, and seems to provide more even heating than the Cucina Pro, as evidenced by the more uniform color of the cookie.SummaryI donβt want to knock the Cucina Pro. It had good build quality & looked nice. With the right tricks, I could achieve an acceptable result. I suspect it might do better with other recipes. But for me, the Chefβs Choice unit was the hands down-winner. The pros and cons below are specific to my recipe, and as compared to the other unit:Cucina ProPros: NoneCons: circles too close together for my recipe.Chefβs ChoicePros: Heat control, heat retention (higher wattage & probably better thermostat), more even heating, bigger surface, slightly thinner cookie.Cons: None

This Krumkake Cookie iron is perfect for me as I will probably only make these cookies a couple of times a year, at Christmas as a traditional cookie and possibly in July for little cones paired with homemade ice cream when the grandkids come for dinner. My daughter and I made these together last night, and found, as other krumkake makers say, that the work goes smoother with two sets of hands. That is especially so for this electric iron which makes two cookies at once. When I set the dough on both plates and closed the lid my daughter would start the timer. After I carefully removed the cookies with a silicon spatula to two small wire cooling racks, she would wrap them around the two cones (which I purchased separately) and set them aside to cool. The cookies would harden quickly as they cooled, just before time to remove the next set of cookies. My daughter would move them to larger wire cooling racks while I removed the next two cookies and we’d start the process over.My favorite thing about the electric iron is we were able to sit down at our working space the whole time. The old fashioned stove top Krumkake baker entails standing at the stove during the whole process, and includes the need to turn the baker over halfway through. I no longer have the stamina to stand that long as we made a double batch, and will do again. According to videos I have watched and other reviews read I learned that most people prefer the way the cookies turn out better with the traditional stove top version. So if you have plenty of stamina that might be the better option for you.We did use the recipe included in the book for Krumkake by Cucina Pro with cardamom and vanilla. You can see in the photos provided we were experimenting with timing and the amount of dough. We have a ways to go before we perfect it, but we did find that if the cookies are just the size or a little smaller than the printed pattern, they were easier to shape into tighter cones. Also, I struggled getting the same amount of dough each time and have a few ideas to try making the amount more consistent next time. We found the less batter used , the thinner the cookie turned out, and the less time needed to reach golden brown. Some of the darker ones you see really surprised us as they cooked the same amount of time as the rest. All in all, being a novice at Krumkake, I am not dissuaded and look forward to perfecting the process. I am very pleased with this purchase and I know we will make these cookies again.

Taught grandson (12) how to use mine and the next day, Christmas Day, he showed his mother how to use it. I’m use to a heavier duty maker and this one seemed a bit flimsy but it did the job!

This item was designed to do ONE specific purpose and do it well.It is NOT a “multipurpose” kitchen appliance. It is like a waffle iron. It makes small highly decorated Krumkake. Think of something that tastes like a fortune cookie but looks like a paper thin waffle. So, if you absolutely positively must make Krumkake on a regular basis – then this is the item for you.Side note: Buy a NEW one. I tried to be frugal and save a few dollars. The actual machine was pristine. The storage box however was absolutrely COVERED in masses of package tape. So much tape that I had to use a knife to cut through to just open the box. It ruined the storage box. It is not possible to use the box to store the machine in my pantry.

It’s been great, so far. Have made one batch of waffle cones for ice cream. It’s very simple to use, just follow directions on your waffle cone recipe. Beware: there aren’t any instructions for use included in the box with the appliance. They have included plenty of warnings and some recipes. You just plug it into your electrical receptacle and it starts to heat up. There are no: on/off buttons, no settings, etc.

Even comes with recipes but Iβve been using regular cake and brownie mix. Fast easy and fun. You can make bowls out of them too.
