One other reviewer returned his unit for this same problem. Apparently I got his return (kidding-not kidding). The first time used, top plate would fall down, side button would show “released” position without having been touched, no way to change that position, and when heated with the waffle inside, had to insert a thin silicone fish turner between the cracks and lift up the top plate to get the waffle out. Noticed it would happen BEFORE I heated up, and discovered that if I would slide lock from unlocked to locked, then back to unlocked, it would stay in place, but it was apparent that the slots used to hold that top plate in position were NOT lined up properly. When heated up, that trick wouldn’t even work. Hence the silicone spatula rescue. This is a specific unit defect, so am returning for a replacement to see if next one works. But the other reviewers that said although the top layer comes out crispy and browned, the bottom comes out wimpy and pale were spot on. That is a design defect with the whole unit. Since I only make savory Keto waffles, that part doesn’t really matter to me, but if you eat waffles made with flour(s) that would probably be a pretty big issue to you. I am hoping the 2nd unit will have a top plate that will behave itself and stay put until I WANT it to turn loose! Will update my review accordingly if it does or does not. (I administer an online Keto group with over 200 members and was planning to post a review on that group for “Keto waffles” using this unit–think I will hold off now).UPDATE: Received 2nd unit in record time, tried it out, and it does NOT have the same top plate problem, the release button worked, and got a nice healthy “CLICK” when I put it back in place, which I did NOT get from the first unit. Even the bottom of my waffle came out brown and crispy. So I am keeping this one and am happy with final outcome.

First: I like that it has 3 setting options. Light, medium, & dark. (My old model only had off & on)Next: the indicator knob has no visual markings. If you were visually impaired this knob would be welcomed. (I had to feel for the notch. I thought it was hard to find.)Another: The indicator light is a welcome to let you know when your waffle is finished. A lot of modern appliances also make a sound. This would be helpful for the visually impaired & to the average consumer who left the room.Another: I always place a cookie sheet under my waffle maker. This catches over spill. I have yet to see this on a waffle maker.Another: I do appreciate the recipes that were included. However it’s a printed copy. This seems really old school. A web site with this information would prevent the paper from getting soiled. The company does have a social media site you can follow them on.And lastly: The removable waffle plates are so convenient. (My last waffle maker did not have this function.)

Does not make waffles as crisp as my old one, but otherwise a good unit. Also, the outside gets burning hot and remains so for quite a while after turning off. Would not buy if you have young kids!

Editing my original review to add that their customer service is top of the line! I standing here with my brand new waffle maker and grateful for a truly decent company.I absolutely loved this waffle maker. Soooo easy to use and clean. But it was cheaply made and things started to fall apart quickly. The lock feature never quite worked right. I would have to jiggle it every single time I opened in order for it to release. But now, six months after I bought it, the plate release button is loose. It releases the plates while cooking. When I open the waffle maker, I have to first fish the top plate off the waffle and attach it back before I can get my waffle out.

Why did I not buy this model 34 years ago? Never thought I would fall in love again at my age. But one gorgeous fall day, a quiet waffle maker just came a calling. I can only hope we remain together until our days are done.

We switched to this waffle maker after using the type that flips over. This is so easy to use and clean up is a breeze. The first time I made waffles, I used the recipe included for the basic waffle. It was delicious. The second time, I used the Bisquick recipe for waffles and that came out good. Both times, I set the heat setting at 3. Perfectly brown, and cooked through.
