So I bought this to replace two other appliances that I use. I’m trying to reduce the amount of junk in my space. First, I’ll talk about the things that are good about this appliance. It has a nice, big cooking area, even in its “folded” state. Big enough for four of those hamburger patties you buy from Wally-world, or four fried eggs (per side… fold it flat, and you could make 8 eggs at a time. That’s a lot of eggs!)It does heat up fairly quickly… mine gets to 375 in just under 6 minutes. It is pretty easy to clean, but then, the nonstick coating is still new on mine. We’ll see how it holds up.Now, the places where it fell just a little short of the mark:First, the cooking plates are a bit finicky to install. You have to get them seated just right before you press down to lock them into place. It’s not really difficult, just fiddly enough to be annoying. Taking them out is no problem: press the button, and they’re popped up, ready for removal.Despite the cooking plates’ size, you’ll want to use a smaller spatula to deal with your food… or silicon-coated tongs. There is a lip that runs around the edge of the plate, and it makes getting a big spatula under the food somewhat difficult.Next, this thing is big. Really big. Like vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly… whoops. No, it’s not going to take over your kitchen, but you’d best have about a foot and a half of counter space available to set this on, if you want any clearance around it at all. And this is the really nasty problem: This thing sucks up space like you wouldn’t believe, because *it wasn’t designed to be stored*. That’s right, there is no good way to put this thing away other than sitting flat on a surface as if you were going to cook with it. There is no latch to hold it closed for storage, and while you CAN stand it upright on its back side, it’s not stable doing so, so you’d better have it securely propped up on either side in the cupboard. So, you think, well, annoying, but I’ll use it a lot, so I’ll just leave it sitting on the counter, ready to go whenever I need it… but… NO. This thing has what I consider a MASSIVE safety flaw. THERE IS NO OFF SWITCH. With any other appliance I’ve ever seen with a temperature control, if you turn it all the way down, that is considered OFF. Not with this machine. The thermostat dial only goes down to 250… and they mean it. It will continue to heat up if you leave it plugged in. You HAVE TO unplug this to turn it off. So… it wasn’t designed to be stored, and it wasn’t designed to sit ready for use… I just don’t know what they were actually thinking when they built this thing.I was willing to give it 4 stars for the storage problem. I mean, that’s annoying, but not earth-shattering. But I consider the lack of an OFF to be a huge safety violation, and I took off an entire star just for that.I would also have liked this thing to come with a waffle iron plate… or at least the option to add one, along with some other potential options… but Hamilton Beach offers no accessories to upgrade this unit. This is annoying, but I didn’t count off for it, because I already knew that when I bought it. Do be aware, in case it isn’t obvious from the pictures, there is only ONE “grill” plate (the one with the ridges.) The top plate is always the flat griddle-style plate. If you want grill marks on your burgers, you’re gonna have to flip them. The unit seems to work fine, as far as cooking goes. Don’t try to make grilled cheese panini-style, though. You’ll end up with grilled cheese pancakes. 🙂

So I am not a person who writes bad reviews about a product, but this is a common situation. Some reviews on here are also experiencing the same exact problem. The grill itself is pretty well made (except for the driptray). It cooks my bacon & hamburgers really well. Fast forward to 3 uses and sure enough the drip tray produced a crack that leaves bacon people like me with a solid greasy mess. I use thick bacon & make 2-3 pounds on weekends. Imagine the total grease. So, I call Hamilton and the grease tray is not in stock. So their idea is to send me a new one. Just cut the cord off & throw away. Weird I know, but that’s what happens. So, I get the new grill. Forward a couple more uses and lo & behold…the same problem occurs. The drip tray is still not in stock, but I see a pattern emerging.I’m flabbergasted by a company who, when you tell them to remake the drip tray, will not do the right thing. Obviously there is a major flaw in this product & should be an easy fix. Instead, they want to send customers a new one. The grill itself is perfectly fine. The plastic is so brittle & all they need is to replace it with that materiel (I forget what it is called) that looks like plastic, but can withstand a beating. Either that or make it out of stainless steel. Probably cost $20 at most and now make it in bulk, maybe $10. The replacement plastic POS on their website is less than $7.Just be aware that if you want to constantly be fixing your drip tray, than this is the one for you. Shame on Hamilton for not making this right & Amazon should pull these, along with Hamilton making a recall until the thing is fixed.UPDATE:So I call Hamilton Beach over the phone. I put in a complaint in January 21, 2021 about the drip tray problem. I cannot speak with any person above the regular phone person who can do nothing power-wise. So I also send an email. Their suggestion is to purchase their always out of stock drip tray on their website. Maybe it’s always out-of-stock, because the drip tray is junk. So, my only option is to complain, but never get any results. So again I wouldn’t recommend it now, since their customer service department is useless and it shows. I own other products and they haven’t broke on me, but this is one product I wouldn’t recommend now.

Cord is too short.

Disappointed you have to unplug it to turn it off.

This is a perfect size for 4 burger patties, or 4 smaller or 3 somewhat larger steaks. It is great for frying up some bacon! Just pop off the plates and wipe them clean, and then hand wash or even put them in the dishwasher (which I do sometimes). The adjustable temperature setting is a plus, and the nonstick plates seem to be of a good quality. Plus since both sides heat up, it does lessen the cooking time.

Great little machine but the top coil stop working after 35 days of use, disappointed

When you open flat to use both sides, you only have one temp control for both sides. The top when laid flat is cooler than the base. I made pancakes using both sides laid flat and the top plate pancakes were not done while the pancakes on the bottom plate were ready to come off. I like the way the plates come off easily for washing and the non-stick coating. The griddle folds up making it easy to store. I guess I’ll have to experiment some more to see which side is best for bacon and which side is better for pancakes when I open flat.
